Safety is an integral part of our DNA and values. It is a value shared by our entire organisation —from the headquarters down to every local network— in the form of a specific policy on operations and maintenance activities applicable to all our passenger transit modes and solutions.

Process

Regardless of the mode of transport or country in which we operate, RATP Dev operates and maintains public transport networks with a total and uncompromising commitment to the safety of passengers, teams, customers, service providers, and third parties.

Our Safety Policy enables us to achieve the highest safety standards and perform better every day in this area.

From top to bottom, our organisation is governed and guided by our Safety Policy to ensure the safety of all passengers using our rail and road networks, third parties with whom we share the road, and all our employees, service providers and subcontractors, in compliance with the regulatory requirements specific to each country and mode of transport.

One of the guiding principles of our Safety Policy is the Safety Management System (SMS) that we implement on all our networks to ensure compliance with safety directives and procedures in accordance with local laws. We conduct internal audits to assess the suitableness, quality, and effectiveness of the processes arising from our operating companies’ actions. Such audits are carried out on a regular basis by experts from RATP Dev’s technical department in collaboration with the RATP group’s internal audit and inspection department. This lets us ensure that our high safety standards are put into practice on all our networks around the world. Every year, all our operating companies carry out a self-assessment campaign on their internal inspection practices with respect to Rail and Road Safety. This means that across the group, we have a shared framework for assessing the suitableness of those inspections of the main safety-related processes on our networks.  From day to day, we promote the development and upkeep of our in-house culture of safety. The value we place on safety is intrinsic to our production staff and our management, and it relies on the commitment of all our teams. We also have a “Safety Committee” made up of our safety experts. They deliberate on our Rail and Road Safety strategy, its implementation, and its continuous improvement through the sharing of best practices.

At RATP Dev, safety is our number one priority. It is everyone’s business, and at all levels of responsibility. To that end, we regularly organise awareness-raising initiatives for our employees and the general public on Road Safety and risk-prevention rules on our networks. For example:

  • RATP Dev London launched a pilot scheme of safety training sessions for its drivers at the Tolworth, Epsom, and Fulwell garages. Since the scheme was launched, the number of accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists has fallen sharply. The six-month programme was developed in partnership with Transport for London’s (TfL) Bus Safety Innovation Fund and in collaboration with the London Cycling Campaign (LCC), which targets a 65% reduction in the number of accidents causing fatalities and serious injuries on the streets of England’s capital city by 2022.
  • In Casablanca, RATP Dev has joined forces with the organising authority Casa Transport and CNPAC (the National Committee for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents) to work on Road Safety issues. They organised visits to local schools to promote Road Safety rules and teach the children the correct ways to use the tramway. In 2019, the awareness campaign reached close to 40 schools and 20,000 children.
  • At the 2018 edition of the Innov & Go internal innovation challenge, Cars Perrier—one of RATP Dev’s operating companies in Ile-de-France—presented its Safety Day. The event was a great success. Indeed, within a year, the initiative had been adopted by fourteen of our other operating companies in France, as well as in London and Hong Kong. The purpose of the event is to make employees aware of road risks through a range of activities and themed stands organised with various safety stakeholders (fire brigades, insurance companies, etc.). The objective is to improve everyone’s understanding of road risks and ultimately reduce the number of accidents.

Due to our broad international presence, our employees may find themselves exposed to specific local risks, depending on the country. Whether for employees on the move, expatriates, or local staff, we make the safety of our personnel an absolute priority. In line with the RATP group’s approach, we have drawn up safety guidelines for our employees who need to travel, as well as procedures and processes to put into practice to best manage staff safety according to the local risks. This has led to a special partnership with International SOS, a travel security services firm. We are also implementing an ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) certification plan. Three of our operating companies were certified in 2019 and 7 more are expected to be certified within the next two years.
